The permanent exhibit documents the region’s history in visual arts as well as reflecting contemporary issues that are relevant internationally or locally for people living here.

The story of Wollongong Art Gallery began in July 1951 when a group of passionate artists formed the Illawarra Art Society. Their aim was to promote art and education within this region. They fundraised by organizing film nights and competitions with prizes awarded for the best paintings or sculptures from each competition judged by members who were also experts in their field;

The Wollongong Art Gallery is home to a diverse program that includes exhibits and activities highlighting the unique energy, creativity & artistry of Illawarra region alongside those derived from partner institutions around Australia.

Wollongong Art Gallery’s ART SMART is a program for primary school children who want to improve their artistic skills through fun and stimulating exercises. The lessons are taught by our specialist art teacher in an outside-the-classroom context, with all plans designed specifically towards nurturing individual creativity while encouraging the expression of ideas without boundaries.
